Mission Statement: The Gesner Institute Society exists to protect the earth science heritage of Nova Scotia contained in the geological collections by way of collection acquisition for the benefit of  society.

Who was Abraham Gesner?   He was born in Chipman Nova Scotia   in 1797 and set up a medical practice in 1824. He had a passion for geology and collected specimens in th Parrsboro area. He was  the author of “The Geology and Mineralogy  of Nova Scotia” ,was  New Brunswick’s  provincial geologist ,established a natural history museum and developed   the process of distilling   kerosene which was a key development of  the petroleum industry.

The formation of the Gesner Institute was sparked by the unique Eldon and Elaine George Memorial Collection which was at risk of being losty. It is important to preserve and celebrate the Nova Scotia geological collection. Eldon spent a lifetime collecting fossils, minerals and rocks in the Parrsboro area. He still operates probably the oldest rock shop in North America. Eldon is widely recognized  for his discoveries including  the world’s smallest dinosaur tracks.
