Mission Statement: The Gesner Institute Society exists to protect the earth science heritage of Nova Scotia contained in the geological collections by way of collection acquisition for the benefit of society.
Who was Abraham Gesner? He was born in Chipman Nova Scotia in 1797 and set up a medical practice in 1824. He had a passion for geology and collected specimens in th Parrsboro area. He was the author of “The Geology and Mineralogy of Nova Scotia” ,was New Brunswick’s provincial geologist ,established a natural history museum and developed the process of distilling kerosene which was a key development of the petroleum industry.
The formation of the Gesner Institute was sparked by the unique Eldon and Elaine George Memorial Collection which was at risk of being losty. It is important to preserve and celebrate the Nova Scotia geological collection. Eldon spent a lifetime collecting fossils, minerals and rocks in the Parrsboro area. He still operates probably the oldest rock shop in North America. Eldon is widely recognized for his discoveries including the world’s smallest dinosaur tracks.
