Colour of Minerals January 8th, 2020

Starting at 8pm; Note later date

Join us for our January meeting (a week later, January 8th) where David Bellamy will talk about how minerals develop their colour. David’s presentation will include a discussion of

a) idiochromatic minerals which owe their colour to their composition and thus, can only be one colour, such as malachite;

b) allochromatic minerals which owe their colour to impurities in their crystal structure and to inclusions, such as rubies and fire agate, respectively;

c) pseudochromatic minerals whose colour(s) are due to optical tricks due to the stone’s structure, such as opal;

The meeting begins at 8 pm at the Knox United Church Hall 2575 Midland Ave, Scarborough, north east corner.

David Bellamy, a recently retired High school teacher of the Sciences, focusing on the subjects Biology, Earth & Space, started his rock collection at the age of 10. His collecting odyssey has grown over the last 25+ years, resulting in a sizeable collection of just about anything imaginable that is related to minerals.
