February’s meeting – Meteorite collecting

Meeting to be held on February 4th at 8 pm

You may have heard of meteorites; but what exactly are they? In the context of meteorites, this presentation will explore the differences between earth and space, where meteorites come from, how we know they are from space, different types of meteorites based on origin and composition, where and how we find meteorites, and meteorite hunting (rock-hounding for space nerds) Actual meteorites will be available to view after the presentation. You can hold a piece of an asteroid or the moon in your hands.

Randy Sinukoff, our presenter, has been collecting minerals for more than 40 years and enjoys rockhounding, especially with family and friends. As an extension of his interest in science, Randy got into meteorite collecting 15 years ago. He has met many interesting people while collecting minerals and meteorites. Miners and meteorite hunters typically have great stories to share! Randy enjoys learning more about these topics and sharing common interests with others.

Randy is a professional environmental engineer working for Stantec Consulting Ltd., in Markham, Ontario. He has 35 years of consulting experience in environmental auditing, hazard analysis, regulatory compliance, management systems, contaminated sites, and sustainability. He also teaches environmental and health & safety management part-time at the University of Toronto, and at Centennial College.

The Randy Raffle – Extra Bonus! Randy will be raffling 5 small meteorites during his presentation on Feb 04 th. The only way to be a winner is to show up at the meeting.
